Varna’s Medical program in English is six years long. It consists of ten semesters and one year of state clinical internships. The syllabus is entirely identical to that of the Bulgarian course, bar that it is of course taught in English. However, all students will be required to learn Bulgarian during the first three years, so that they can communicate with patients as they begin their clinical studies in the third year and forward.
The first two years of the course will provide an overview of the basic sciences as related to Medicine. The first year focused on biology, chemistry and the physical sciences. In the second year, the focus shifts towards the biomedical sciences that are most relevant to physicians.
Training is through lectures, seminars, practical exercises and independent study. Practical training is through ongoing work during semesters and a pre-graduation internship.
The clinical years are when ‘lectures and laboratories translate into patient care.’ Teaching from third year onwards will take place in clinical settings in the University teaching hospital and involves bedside teaching with patients. The final year of the program is entirely hands-on with patients, and students will work under the guidance of practising specialist physicians, honing their diagnostic and therapeutic skills. Finally, students are able to sit the state examinations, which cover both theory and practical medical ability.
Tuition fees at Varna Medical University are 8000 EUR per year.
Varna does not interview. However, it does run an entrance exam. This consists of tests in Chemistry and Biology, across five sections. The first is a multiple choice component, where there are four possible answers. There is no negative marking. The second section is gap filling questions – each test item has four missing words or terms. Here, you will need to write the most appropriate words or terms to fill the gaps. The third section is matching questions – you will need to match each item from column 1 with those given in column 2. The fourth section is true / false questions. The final section is ‘definitions and explanations’ in which you will need to explain concepts from Biology or Question.
The duration of each test is 90 minutes, so in total the examination is 3 hours.
