The University of Nicosia Medical school is the largest in Cyprus, and offers three medical programmes and four postgraduate degrees. The medical programs are the Doctor of Medicine (MD), a 6-year undergraduate-entry degree, the Graduate Entry – Doctor of Medicine Degree (GEMD) MD degree programme designed for those holding university degrees in any field, and the St George’s, University of London Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS),a 4-year graduate-entry British medical degree quality assured by the UK General Medical Council and awarded by St George’s, University of London. We will focus particularly on the latter here.
In total, more than 1000 students from 80 countries are enrolled in the Medical School.
The university has ‘world-class faculty members, experienced and supportive staff, international partnerships, and state-of-the-art facilities and learning resources.’ The curriculum is student-centred and modern, and designed to promote critical thinking, reflection, collaborative learning, and the early development of clinical skills. Graduates practise around the world, including in the US, Canada, UK, and elsewhere.
The MBBS program offered at the University of Nicosia under the degree-awarding powers of St George’s, University of London, has the same recognition as the university’s other programs, with the additional bonus of being linked and mapped to the GMC’s guidance for medical schools. St George’s, University of London is ranked in the top 250 universities in the world and is ranked number one for the quality of citations for research influence by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It was established in 1751, and alumni and former faculty include Edward Jenner (who was the first to develop the concept of the vaccine), Henry Gray (of Gray’s Anatomy), and more.
The curriculum is divided into four sectors. These are:
– Basic and Clinical Sciences. This theme is designed to provide you with basic knowledge of the structure and function of the normal human body. You will learn anatomy, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology and physiology, and the scientific aspects of all the clinical disciplines, such as cardiology, obstetrics & gynaecology, neurology, urology, orthopaedics and rheumatology etc.
– Patient and Doctor. This theme focuses on the clinical, communication and interpersonal skills that are required for medical practice.
– Community and Population Health. Here you will put the biological, social and psychological disciplines together to create a way of thinking that positions you as a holistic doctor, ready to see patients within their cultural context.
– Personal and Professional Development. This ensures that you understand the wider world and its impact on the profession, and will cover themes like medical ethics, medical law, critical thinking and critical appraisal, interprofessional education, and professional behaviour.
You will need strong high school results and good grades in Biology, plus Chemistry or Physics or Maths. You will also need an internationally recognised English language certificate, unless you were taught in English, and a personal statement in English.
Then, you will be required to sit a personal interview. This is likely to be a panel interview, and can be conducted in person or by Skype.
