The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh employs a holistic approach in its admissions process, giving equal weight to academic results and non-academic qualities. Each year, the school invites around 400 candidates from Scotland, the rest of the UK, and the Republic of Ireland, and approximately 500 overseas and graduate candidates for interviews.


The interview process is conducted in a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format, featuring seven stations, each lasting 10 minutes. Five of these stations are staffed and focus on:

  • Work Experience
  • Career Exploration and Awareness of being a Professional
  • Awareness of Animal Welfare
  • Data Interpretation
  • Moral/Ethical Dilemma


Candidates are individually interviewed at these stations, where they demonstrate their understanding and experiences relevant to the veterinary field. The remaining two stations are unstaffed, comprising a Practical Task and a Numeracy Task, where the use of calculators is not permitted.

Successful candidates typically excel in both academic and non-academic criteria due to the high level of competition for a limited number of places. The University of Edinburgh also emphasises care experience, considering factors like relevant work experience and non-academic achievements in addition to academic performance.
