King’s College

The most central university in London, and one of the best in the world – ranked 31st overall. Experience placements in world famous hospitals, like King’s College Hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas’ and electives abroad. King’s ranks as the top nursing faculty in the UK, and second in the world. The course offers exactly a 50/50 split between clinical and simulated practice vs lectures, seminars and guided learning. The course aims to produce a well rounded nurse, with knowledge of global and national healthcare, equality and diversity, patients and their families, and the bioscience that underpins healthcare. The Simulation and Interactive learning Centre is award winning, and has both hospital and home care environments, with an ICU, adult ward, and operating theatre. The two base campuses are Waterloo – home to Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery, and Guy’s Campus – home to the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine and the Dental Institute. You’ll need a minimum of BBB to study here. 97% of graduates were either working or in further study 6 months after graduating. 

City University

City University has been teaching nursing since 1877, and ranks first in London for student satisfaction amongst nursing students. It also ranks first in London in the Times Good University Guide 2020. Expect to spend around 60% of your time on placement – these placements include famous hospitals like Great Ormond Street and Parts. There’s a real focus on clinical skills and simulated practice, with significant teaching at a new and state-of-the-art Clinical Skills Centre – so you’ll never go to a placement feeling underprepared. Research is also a focus, and many academic staff here are actively involved in research, making valuable contributions to the healthcare sector. Joining a nursing course at City makes you a ‘CapitalNurse’ – this program links all nursing students across London, and offers you fast and streamlined employment by NHS trusts in North London after you graduate. University of Greenwich

Ranked number one in London for student satisfaction by the Guardian 2019. You’ll be based at their Avery Hill Campus, and on placement around South-East London and Kent. You may work either in hospitals or the community, meaning you can tailor your placement to your future career aspirations. Whilst on placement, you are allocated a supervisor who supports your learning, and a practice assessor who completes the formal assessment of your practical learning. 50% of your time will be spent on placement and 50% on guided learning, tutorials & lectures. You’ll need BBC to apply – the university of Greenwich is ranked 90th overall in the UK.

Kingston University

This course offers a 50/50 split between placement, skills labs and the community vs university based & theoretical teaching. The Nursing Medical Council commended the amount of student engagement on the course; you can get involved with volunteering, fundraising sports, research and more. There is also a focus on arts-based education, like plays, drama and literature. Ranked number one in London any the Guardian in 2020. Kingston has an award winning simulation suite with a wide range of realistic environments to learn in, with role-players and patient simulators. Year 1 is mainly theoretical teaching and learning, whereas year 2 and 3 will be mainly placement and skills teaching. You’ll be expected to have BBC at A level to enter.

London South Bank University

LSBU has a total of five dedicated nursing skills labs, across two campuses. It’s ranked first for graduate prospects in the UK by the Complete University Guide 2020, and second for academic support amongst its London competitors (National Student Survey 2020). You can choose between Southwark and Havering campuses. The course is 53% coursework, and you’ll spend 50% of your time in clinical practice at hospitals like Guy’s and St Thomas’, University College, Barts and the Royal London. You will alternate between placements and university teaching – in year one, expect two six week placements, four placements in year two, and three placements in year three including a 12 week finale placement. You’ll receive a personal tutor who will be your primary contact for academic and professional support throughout your studies. You’ll need BBC in your A Levels to apply.
