Studying Dentistry at the University of Siena

IMAT Preparation Specialists

The University of Siena was founded in 1240, making it one of the oldest universities in the world. It went through a huge expansion program in the 20th century, having had only 400 students after WWI. Today, it has roughly 20,000. There are a number of different faculties covering Medicine, law, engineering and more. Courses are taught in both Italian and English, and there are a range of additional summer programs on offer. A significant amount of the university and its teaching happens in ancient renovated buildings – for example, the Innovation Lab is found in what was once the Convent of Santa Chiara. Nowadays the university combines both these old buildings and much newer ones, with the new buildings designed in such a way that they compliment the older ones. Siena is located in Tuscany, south of Florence. The university is ranked between 600 and 800 in worldwide university rankings.

Siena Overview for Dentistry

The undergraduate program Dentistry in English is new, and designed with the aim of training dentists who are truly competent, with adequate clinical experience and a thorough grounding in the ethics of dentistry and oral care. The program centres on dentistry itself, but does ensure to have a foundation in basic science and in Medicine as well. Tuition combines lectures with internships, to ensure that students are used to different learning methods and are ready for the practical, hands-on nature of dentistry.

The course is a single-cycle, and is designed according to the ADEE’s (Association for European Dental Education) and the Italian Ministry of Education’s recommendations.

The final year is entirely clinical, with students working with patients every day to develop their practical abilities. They will become used to dealing with patients, and with using new tools and materials that will allow them to operate at the forefront of dentistry when they graduate.

Siena: City Overview for Students

The city of Siena has a young and progressive feel, as the students make up a large part of its population. The newspaper La Republicca put Siena first amongst Italian universities in terms of internationalisation and services, which gives some idea as to how well-embedded the university is within the city and the quality of life that its students have. Siena is in the middle of Tuscany, and has great transport connections with Florence, Rome, Milan, and Naples – meaning that students can easily get to larger cities if needed. There aren’t too many tourists here, which means that students might benefit from a more authentic experience than they might get elsewhere. Of course, there’s a huge amount to do, from cultural experiences like concerts and talks through to a variety of restaurants and bars, with brilliant local food.

The city is cheap for students, costing only around 600 Euros per month, including accommodation.
