Southampton Nursing Interview Questions & Tips

Advice & Insight From Nursing Interview Specialists

Key Information

Southampton look for BBB at A Level, and exclude General Studies and Critical Thinking. They expect at least one science or social science subject. At GCSE, they look for English Language, Mathematics and Science, all at a minimum of Grade C. After you apply, they assess your application based on your predicted grades, academic achievements, personal statement, and your academic reference. They will look at how your personal values align with the nursing profession. If you are shortlisted, then you will be invited to interview.

The Interview

Southampton describe their selection process as ‘an essential part of your journey’ to joining their course. It is therefore to be seen positively, as ‘an opportunity… to demonstrate your enthusiasm, skills, understanding, insight and personal values relevant to nursing.’ For the 2021 intake, you will undertake a virtual interview via Microsoft Teams. If for any reason you are unable to do a virtual session, they are willing to work with students to find a solution.

You should expect a 15-20 minute interview with a lecturer, who will try to get to know you, and hone in on your motivation for nursing. Alongside this traditional question and answer session, you will be offered the opportunity to find out more about the course, who teaches it, and what life is like at Southampton.

The admissions tutor will then evaluate what you have said, re-read your UCAS application, your personal statement and your reference, and combine all these to make a fair and informed decision.

Southampton’s Recommendations

Southampton provide more assistance to their interviewees than other universities, including a reading list. They say, ‘you should try to read one or two’ of the documents that they provide. However, it is clearly imperative to read all, in detail, and reflect on each.

The documents you should read are:

  • The NMC’s Enabling Professionalism
  • The Royal Society for Public Health’s 2018 piece, That Age Old Question (pages 4 – 27)
  • NHS England’s Future in mind: Promoting, protecting and improving our children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing (pages 9-20).
  • The World Health Organisation’s Dementia paper.
  • The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health’s 2019 paper State of Child Health & Us.
  • The NHS’s 2019 paper NHS Long Term Plan: Overview and summary.

The Course

Southampton’s course emphasises the importance of looking at Nursing from a global perspective. A Southampton graduate ‘understands health needs within a global context… [is] responsive and inclusive towards marginalised groups, and understands the challenges and opportunities offered by a globalised nursing workforce.’ There is also a focus on technology and innovation, and thought given to supporting people through digital technologies.

You should therefore think beyond core qualities and sciences, to the future of the profession in an ever-changing world. Beyond reading the core material, give detailed thought to where you could see yourself practising in a radically different healthcare system or landscape. Look into technological advances in healthcare, and the predicted direction of healthcare trends in the next 20-50 years. Ensure that you are up-to-date on patient-centred care, and efforts to reduce morbidity and mortality in marginalised groups.

You should think about research, and the role that critical analysis plays in evidence based practice. Read up on recent news, look at some healthcare and medical journals, and make sure you are knowledgeable on COVID-19.

Southampton emphasise the importance of the multi-disciplinary team – ‘you will be studying within an inter-disciplinary community of practitioners who will foster pride in the role of the nurse.’ Be clear on why you want to be a nurse, the role of a nurse, and the roles of those that will work with you and around you.

You will be expected to develop the skills to communicate ably, to show empathy, and to lead and ‘empower’ teams. Therefore, make sure to focus on your inter-personal skills as well.
