Sevenoaks School 11+ Test Format

The 11+ entrance examination at Sevenoaks School is a comprehensive process designed to assess the aptitude and potential of applicants for Year 7 entry. The test format is detailed and varied, encompassing several key academic areas to ensure a thorough evaluation of each candidate.

The Mathematics paper, lasting one hour, delves into the breadth of the Key Stage 2 curriculum. This includes a range of topics such as numerical reasoning, geometry, measurement, and statistics. The focus is not only on the students’ knowledge and understanding of these areas but also on their application of mathematical concepts to solve problems. This paper challenges students to demonstrate their numerical agility and problem-solving skills in a range of contexts.

In the English assessment, also one hour, students are tested on their reading comprehension and creative writing abilities. The first section, a reading comprehension task, requires students to closely engage with a given text, extracting and interpreting information, and demonstrating a deep understanding of the language and its nuances. The second part of the English paper is a test of creative writing skills. Here, students are expected to craft a piece of writing in response to a prompt, showcasing their ability to organise ideas, use language effectively, and express themselves imaginatively and coherently.

The Verbal Reasoning paper, spanning an hour, is designed to evaluate the children’s logical and analytical thinking abilities. This paper includes exercises that require the interpretation and manipulation of written information, challenging students to apply their reasoning skills to new and unfamiliar situations.

Complementing these written assessments, Sevenoaks School also includes a group discussion as part of the entrance exam. Lasting approximately 40 minutes, this segment provides an opportunity for candidates to demonstrate their communication skills, ability to collaborate with peers, and capacity to engage thoughtfully in a group setting.

Sevenoaks School 11+ Commonly Tested Areas & Exam Tips

When preparing for the Sevenoaks School 11+ exams, a comprehensive and strategic approach is essential. The exams cover Mathematics, English, and Verbal Reasoning, each requiring a specific set of skills and thorough preparation.

For Mathematics, students should have a firm grasp of Key Stage 2 concepts, including arithmetic, geometry, and data handling. It’s important to practise a wide range of maths problems, focusing on the application of mathematical concepts in different scenarios. Time management is a critical skill to develop, as students need to efficiently navigate through questions within the time constraints of the exam. Also, since calculators are not used, proficiency in manual calculations is vital for accuracy and speed.

In English, a strong emphasis is placed on reading comprehension and creative writing. Regular reading across various genres, including both fiction and non-fiction, will broaden understanding and improve interpretation skills. Developing analytical skills to discern themes, tones, and narrative techniques in texts is also crucial. For creative writing, consistent practice in composing stories, essays, and personal reflections will enhance writing skills. A rich vocabulary and a solid understanding of grammar are indispensable for success in both the comprehension and creative writing sections.

Verbal Reasoning tests logical thinking and language skills. Engaging in activities that enhance logical reasoning, like puzzles and strategy games, can be very beneficial. Practising with past papers will familiarise students with the types of questions in the Verbal Reasoning test, and building a strong vocabulary will aid in this section of the exam.
