Advice & Insight From PA Application Specialists
The Physician Associate Studies Program at Queen Mary University of London has around 60 places available each year. Applications are reviewed by the admissions office to ensure that they meet minimum academic requirements, after which applicants are scored based on a point system that scores applicants for A level Biology or Chemistry, BSc (honours) grades, and Postgraduate qualification (MSc/ PhD). Up to 80 applicants will be interviewed. The university emphasises that ‘it is not possible to predict what values to put on the threshold required for interview, or to use data from previous years to predict subsequent years’ thresholds, since it is essentially competitive and depends on who applies.’
The school operates an assessment centre for its PA program which takes around half a day and involves the completion of various tasks. Tasks will include a group-based task, discussions based around various cases or particular topical issues, a video of a clinician-patient interaction and a structured interview. Candidates will be assessed on these tasks, by trained assessors who will score applicants on predetermined criteria. No offers are given without attending the assessment centre.Â
The selection centre will run its assessment day during late October or early November.
The university highlights an ‘applicant’s determination, communication skills, teamwork skills and personality.’ Applicants will also be asked about their ‘personal experiences gained through work experience or voluntary work’ with the goal of ensuring that they have a ‘realistic appreciation of the academic, physical and emotional demands to successfully complete MSc Physician Associate programme.’
