Pleven Medical University is the largest university in Pleven, Bulgaria. It was founded in 1974, on the site of an 1865 hospital. It boasts state of the art facilities and a vast library. Crucially, it’s recognised by the GMC, meaning that you will be able to practise in the UK after graduating.
The city of Pleven itself is relatively modern, and the location is excellent, just two hours from the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, in the centre of the Danube plain. It offers a range of activities for students.
Pleven uses an interdisciplinary problem-based learning curriculum, which mirrors that used in the UK, US and elsewhere. Problem based learning is deployed as part of a hybrid model of teaching in which you will work using all of PBL, lab work, lectures, seminars, and of course clinics and bedside teaching.
Tuition fees are 7500 EUR per year.
Pleven Medical University Medicine Interview Format
Pleven has an interview of sorts – in reality, more of an exam that is conducted orally. This entrance exam is conducted face to face or online, depending on the situation in a given year. In order to sit the exam, you will need a computer or laptop, webcam, microphone, headphones, internet connection of at least 20 mbps, and Google Chrome.
You must pass the entrance exam, which covers both Biology and Chemistry. Detailed information on the syllabus for these exams can be found on the university’s websites, but you should expect that the difficulty is pitched at A2 or IB level.
After completion of the exam, you will then be ranked. The ranking process combines both your high school work and your entrance exam, in the following formula:
- ‘The high school Diploma grades in Chemistry and Biology equated to the six-point system, which is official in Bulgaria.
- Biology and Chemistry Entry tests result multiplied by 2’
In other words, both your achievements in high school and the entrance exam are vital for success – whereas other universities in Bulgaria use the entrance exam as a pass/fail check.
