Can you discuss a time when you faced a challenging ethical dilemma and how you navigated it?

One challenging ethical dilemma I faced was during my internship at a public defender’s office. I was assisting with a case involving a client who had been accused of a serious violent crime, and in the course of my investigation, I uncovered evidence that strongly suggested the client had committed additional crimes beyond the one they were currently charged with. I knew that this information could be potentially damaging to the client’s case and could also raise questions about my own ethical obligations as a legal representative. To navigate this dilemma, I first sought guidance from my supervising attorney, who helped me to carefully review the relevant ethical rules and standards. We discussed the importance of maintaining client confidentiality and the duty of zealous advocacy, while also considering the potential harm to future victims and the integrity of the legal system. Ultimately, we determined that we had an obligation to protect the client’s confidential information, but that we could also take steps to ensure that the client received appropriate counseling and support to address the underlying issues that may have contributed to their criminal behavior. Through this experience, I learned the importance of seeking guidance and carefully weighing competing ethical principles in complex situations.

I believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion should play a central role in the legal profession, as these values are essential for ensuring equal access to justice, promoting robust and representative decision-making, and building trust and legitimacy with the communities we serve. Throughout my legal education and experiences, I have worked to promote these values in various ways. For example, as a member of my law school’s diversity and inclusion committee, I helped to organize events and workshops on topics such as implicit bias, cultural competency, and allyship. I also served as a peer mentor for incoming students from underrepresented backgrounds, providing guidance and support to help them navigate the challenges of law school. In my internships and clinical experiences, I have sought out opportunities to work with diverse clients and communities, and I have strived to approach these interactions with empathy, curiosity, and respect. I have also advocated for greater diversity and inclusion within the organizations I have been a part of, whether by encouraging more equitable hiring and promotion practices or by speaking out against instances of bias or discrimination.
