The six year Medicine program at the Medical University of Debrecen is designed to reflect the ‘unique strengths and goals of the University’ and the school aims to train doctors who are at the forefront of the profession, through their attitude to training, the knowledge and skills, and their professionalism. Graduates will be compassionate, advocate for patients, and provide true service. The university emphasises that specialist medical careers are the goal for their graduates, upon further training – and that they are well prepared to take these routes. Additionally, it states that its graduates will be suitable and successful candidates for PhDs in the field.

Graduates here receive a ‘Doctor of Medicine’ – verifying that they are now an MD. The school’s graduates are not required to take the PLAB exam in order to practise in the UK.

The school is particularly known for its research, with 45 theoretical and clinical units, and internationally recognised research across the breadth of Life Sciences. Its leading research labs have participated in the foundation of the Research Centre for Molecular Medicine, combining cutting-edge basic research with applied research and technological progress. The centre won the 2003 ‘centre of excellence’ title from the European Commission.

In terms of admission requirements, the first two components to note are English language proficiency, which is assessed at the compulsory entrance examination, and the academic requirements, which are a high school certificate; the entrance examination in biology and physics/chemistry, which is both written and oral, or alternatively the successful completion of the Basic Medicine Course.

The course is made up of 12 semesters, two per year.

Fees are $16,900 per year.

Medical University of Debrecen Medicine Interview Format

The university conducts an entrance exam for all students applying for Medicine. This is compulsory, and it consists of two parts:

  • First, a written test, which is made up of multiple-choice questions – covering definitions, calculations, and more – in Biology. This is compulsory for all. Additionally, the applicant must sit a test in one of Chemistry or Physics – the applicant can choose. Each test takes 50 minutes.
  • Secondly an oral exam or interview, covering Biology, and one of Physics or Chemistry.
