Interviews will be one-to-one, and scheduled with one member of the academic team at Manchester. They are looking for the ability to think on your feet, critically appraise information, communicate ideas well, and evidence that you have given some thought to the issues that are important to the nursing profession. You will be able to ask questions at the end of the interview (and therefore should prepare at least one question to show that you are enthusiastic and have done your research beforehand.) You should expect the interview to take up to 30 minutes.Â
Manchester’s information on their interview reveals it as a relatively typical format, and you should not expect anything out of the ordinary. Make sure to go back through their personal statement requirements, and ensure that you are comfortable handling these topics at interview.Think in detail about why you are interested in the particular field of nursing that you are applying for. Ideally, reflect on work experience and highlight specific events and learnings that drew you down this path.
Think about the transferable skills that you can draw out from your work experience or employment. Communication skills, team working, leadership and an understanding of others are all key skills that you should have developed to some extent already.Ensure that you can prove yourself to be a strong self-directed learner who will have no problem with the workload. Equally, it’s worth acknowledging the challenges of university placements here – show an example of your resilience and ability to work hard.Think about the role of empathy in nursing, make sure you can define it easily, and compare and contrast it to sympathy.

The ‘Six Cs’ of nursing should all be covered in detail. These are: care, compassion, courage, communication, commitment and competence. Think about a time when you have demonstrated each of these values, and consider their importance to the profession.

Read around current healthcare news and issues, especially those most relevant to nursing. Look at the BBC, broadsheet newspapers and medical and healthcare journals. Try to draw out any particular issues that are affecting the nursing profession currently, or are expected to in the near future.Â
