Leeds Nursing Interview Questions & Tips

Advice & Insight From Nursing Interview Specialists

Key Information

Leeds will generally require BBB at A-Level, including a science subject from any of the following: biology, chemistry, human biology, maths, physics, or a social science subject like psychology. They will not accept general studies or critical thinking. You must also have at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, to include Maths, English Language or English Literature, and one Science subject. You must have studied within the last five years. Leeds explain that they will then shortlist applicants using your academic profile – both predicted and achieved grades, and your personal statement. Your personal statement should explain your motivation for nursing, and provide an overview of the transferable skills that you have that are applicable to Nursing.

Leeds’ interview days normally take place from November to March. You will have the chance to talk to current members of staff and students during the day, and there will likewise be qualified nurses taking place in the selection events. There will also be a numeracy test.

Leeds can be differentiated from other courses through its high student satisfaction rating, its consistent excellence in teaching (currently holding a Gold rating), and its high overall ranking (ranked number one in Yorkshire and Humber for Nursing). It emphasises that it seeks to train the best possible future nurses – those that will become high achievers. Leeds also benefits from a truly state of the art clinical skills facility, which has both an adult ward and ICU. You will be able to learn in St James’ University Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary, both leading hospitals.

What do Leeds Look for?

Leeds is a research intensive school, meaning that you will need to show an interest in academia and research to stand out at interview. Consider how research can affect a curriculum, and a profession as a whole. How might you become interested in research in the future?

Leeds’ programme is integrated, incorporating four key strands into each of the modules; applied practice, professional practice, the five dimensions of health and well-being (physical, emotional and intellectual, social and spiritual); and evidence-based practice. You should consider if your learning style suits learning over time, and the gradual build up of knowledge in different domains.

Leeds also emphasises a holistic approach to patient care – the idea of treating the whole person. You should reflect on your work experience to understand this and how you have experienced it, and consider the place of soft-skills like communication and showing empathy within this framework.

What do previous students say?

Leeds’ interview is relaxed and friendly, according to previous applicants. You shouldn’t expect the interviewers to grill you, nor to try to trip you up. The maths test is relatively simple, and focuses on addition, converting fractions etc.

Previous group tasks have included making a mind map with a small group (two or three) other students, that will explain your understanding of Nursing.Apparently Leeds is really relaxed and they’re all nice, they’re not out to trick you the interviewers, they are there to help you get on your way.

The one on one interview is likely to involve your knowledge of the profession, the NHS, and healthcare trends. Your goal should be to show that you have thoroughly read around the profession and understand it.
