John Molson School of Business MBA Interview Questions and Answers:

How do you think businesses can balance economic growth with social and environmental responsibility?

In today’s world, businesses must recognize that their success is intrinsically linked to the well-being of society and the environment. Balancing economic growth with social and environmental responsibility is not only an ethical imperative but also a strategic necessity for long-term sustainability.

One way businesses can achieve this balance is by integrating sustainability into their core strategies and operations, rather than treating it as a separate initiative. This means considering the social and environmental impacts of every decision, from sourcing materials and designing products to managing supply chains and engaging with communities. By taking a holistic, stakeholder-centric approach, businesses can identify opportunities to create shared value and minimize negative externalities.

Another important aspect is setting ambitious yet achievable sustainability goals and regularly measuring and reporting on progress. This helps businesses stay accountable, track their impact, and communicate their efforts to stakeholders. Collaborating with industry partners, NGOs, and governments can also help businesses scale their impact and drive systemic change.

Share an example of a time when you had to navigate a complex ethical dilemma in your professional life.

In my previous role as a marketing manager at a pharmaceutical company, I faced a complex ethical dilemma when I discovered that one of our top-selling products had a potential safety issue that had not been properly disclosed to regulators or the public. The issue was related to a rare but serious side effect that had been reported by a small number of patients, but the company had downplayed the significance of these reports and continued to aggressively market the product.

As someone who strongly believes in transparency and patient safety, I knew that I could not remain silent about this issue. However, I also recognized that speaking up could have significant consequences for the company and my own career. The product accounted for a substantial portion of our revenue, and any negative publicity or regulatory action could have devastating financial impacts.

To navigate this dilemma, I first gathered as much evidence as I could about the safety issue, including reviewing patient reports, clinical trial data, and internal communications. I then reached out to trusted colleagues in the medical and legal departments to get their perspectives and advice. Through these conversations, I realized that there were others in the company who shared my concerns and were willing to support me in raising the issue to senior management.

I then arranged a meeting with my manager and the head of the medical department, where I presented the evidence and made a case for why we needed to take immediate action to address the safety issue. I emphasized that while there might be short-term financial costs, the long-term risks to patient safety and the company’s reputation were far greater. I also proposed a plan for how we could responsibly communicate the issue to regulators and the public, and work to mitigate any potential harm to patients.
