HKUST MBA Interview Questions and Answers:

What attracts you to HKUST's MBA program, and how do you believe it aligns with your career aspirations?

I am drawn to HKUST’s MBA program for several compelling reasons. Firstly, the school’s strong reputation in Asia and globally, combined with its location in Hong Kong, a dynamic business hub, perfectly aligns with my career aspirations in international finance. HKUST’s extensive alumni network and close ties with leading financial institutions in Hong Kong and mainland China will provide me with invaluable opportunities to build my professional network and secure a challenging role in the region.

HKUST’s emphasis on technology and innovation really resonates with me. As someone with a background in fintech, I am excited by the prospect of learning from renowned faculty members who are at the forefront of research in areas like blockchain, artificial intelligence, and big data analytics. The school’s cutting-edge facilities, such as the HKUST Business School Central and the Cyberport Digital Tech Hub, will allow me to stay up-to-date with the latest technological advancements and their applications in business.

Describe a situation where you leveraged technology to solve a business problem or drive innovation.

In my previous role as a product manager at a fintech startup, I had the opportunity to lead the development and launch of a new mobile payment solution for small businesses. The project was initiated in response to the growing demand for contactless payment options during the COVID-19 pandemic, as many small businesses struggled to adapt to the new reality of social distancing and reduced foot traffic.

To address this challenge, I proposed the creation of a mobile app that would allow small businesses to easily accept and process payments from customers using their smartphones. The app would integrate with popular payment gateways and offer features like invoice generation, sales tracking, and customer management, all in one user-friendly platform.

The results were impressive: within the first six months of launch, we onboarded over 1,000 small businesses and processed over $10 million in transactions. The app received positive reviews from both merchants and customers, who appreciated its ease of use, security features, and low transaction fees. The success of this project not only helped our startup gain a foothold in the competitive fintech market but also demonstrated the power of technology to solve real-world business problems and create value for customers.

How do you plan to contribute to HKUST's diverse and international community?

I am excited to contribute to HKUST’s vibrant and diverse community in several meaningful ways, drawing on my unique background, experiences, and passions. As someone who has lived and worked in multiple countries across Asia and Europe, I have developed a deep appreciation for the value of cultural diversity in fostering innovation, creativity, and personal growth. I look forward to sharing my global perspectives and learning from the rich tapestry of nationalities and backgrounds represented in the HKUST MBA cohort.

One of the ways I plan to contribute to the HKUST community is by taking an active role in the school’s clubs and committees, particularly those focused on fintech and entrepreneurship. As a fintech enthusiast with experience in product development and strategy, I want to collaborate with like-minded classmates to organize events, workshops, and hackathons that explore emerging trends and opportunities in the industry. For example, I would love to organize a fintech conference that brings together startups, investors, and industry leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region to share insights and best practices.
