Harrow School, steeped in history since its establishment in 1572, is a prestigious all-boys boarding school in North West London. Known for its commitment to excellence, Harrow offers a unique blend of traditional values and innovative education. The school’s ethos emphasises holistic development, fostering qualities such as courage, honour, humility, and fellowship. Harrow’s rich curriculum and strong support system create an environment where students are encouraged to achieve their full potential in academics, sports, arts, and personal growth.

Harrow School 16+ Application Process & Interview Format

The 16+ entry process at Harrow is designed to identify boys who will thrive in the school’s rigorous academic environment and contribute positively to school life.

Registration and References: Families must register their sons for 16+ entry in early September of Year 11. A reference is requested from the boy’s current school. Late applications are accepted until the first week of January in Year 11, but early applications are recommended due to limited places.

Assessment for 16+ Entry:

  • Stage 1: Applicants choose four A-Level subjects for assessment. The school requests a reference from the current school and invites the boys to sit tests in these subjects at Harrow or a recognized test centre.
  • Stage 2: Shortlisted candidates are invited to Harrow for an assessment day, which includes additional tests, interviews with the Head Master and registrars, and a seminar with a Head of Subject.

Selection Criteria: The final decision for admission is made by the Head Master, with inputs from the House Master and Registrar. Successful candidates typically have 8 or more GCSE passes with grades 7/8/9, particularly in the subjects they wish to study at A-Level. Harrow seeks students who demonstrate resilience, independence, and a keen interest in extracurricular activities.

Scholarships at Harrow: Scholarships at 16+ entry are awarded in various fields such as academics, music, art, drama, sports, DT, and engineering, typically comprising 5% of the school fees. These are offered in recognition of high performance in the respective fields.

Harrow School 16+ Interview Questions and Answers

Why do you want to join Harrow School?

I am drawn to Harrow School because of its unique blend of tradition and modern educational practices. The full-boarding model, which uses the entire day productively, appeals to me as it fosters a comprehensive learning environment. Harrow’s emphasis on intellectual, emotional, and creative expression in a single-sex educational setting resonates with my own educational values. The school’s rich history, dating back to its founding in 1572 by John Lyon, and its traditions, from the distinctive dress to the communal singing of Harrow Songs, instil a sense of belonging to a larger community. The opportunity to be part of a school with such a significant legacy and yet one that provides a modern, well-rounded education is incredibly appealing. The proximity to London, offering both a peaceful campus and access to the vibrant city, is another aspect that excites me about joining Harrow.

Why will you be a good addition to the sixth form at Harrow School?

I believe I would be a valuable addition to Harrow’s sixth form because of my commitment to both academic and personal development. The diverse backgrounds and abilities of Harrovians resonate with my own experience, and I am excited to contribute my unique perspective to this vibrant community. My academic strengths, coupled with interests in sports and the arts, align well with Harrow’s emphasis on a well-rounded education. I am eager to engage with and learn from peers from different parts of the UK and the world, enriching the school’s diverse environment. Furthermore, my admiration for Harrow’s historic values and my enthusiasm for being part of its continued legacy of producing distinguished individuals make me a fitting candidate for its sixth form. My goal is to actively contribute to the school community, embracing and upholding its cherished traditions while pursuing academic excellence.
