Why do you want to join Eltham College?

Joining Eltham College offers an enriching educational experience, combining a rich history with modern academic and extracurricular facilities. Founded as a school for the children of missionaries, Eltham has evolved into a prestigious co-educational institution, maintaining a legacy of academic excellence and cultural diversity. Its historic 18th-century mansion setting in Mottingham and spacious 70-acre grounds provide a serene learning environment. The school’s commitment to holistic development is evident in its state-of-the-art Sports Centre, offering facilities for a range of sports including rugby, cricket, hockey, tennis, and swimming. This blend of tradition and modernity makes Eltham College an ideal choice for a well-rounded and forward-thinking education.

What is the history of Eltham College?

Eltham College’s origins date back to the early Victorian era as a school for the sons and orphans of missionaries, founded by the London Missionary Society and the Baptist Missionary Society. Initially located in Walthamstow and later Blackheath, it moved to its current site in Mottingham in 1912, a location previously occupied by the Royal Naval School. Initially a small boarding school, Eltham underwent significant changes over the years, notably transitioning from a Direct Grant school to a fully independent institution in 1976. While initially a boys’ school, it began admitting girls into its sixth form in 1978 and became fully co-educational in the 2020s. The school honours its missionary roots through its house names – Carey, Livingstone, Chalmers, and Moffat. The 21st century saw significant developments under Headmaster Paul Henderson, including the construction of the Gerald Moore Art Gallery and the new Turberville building, enhancing the school’s educational and cultural facilities.

What are the facilities and resources available at Eltham College?

Eltham College boasts a wide array of facilities and resources that cater to both academic and extracurricular interests. The school’s 70-acre campus provides ample space for outdoor sports, including rugby and cricket pitches, tennis courts, and a grass athletics circuit. Notably, the campus features two fully-floodlit AstroTurf pitches for hockey and football. The Sports Centre is a focal point for indoor sports activities, housing a dance studio, sports hall with indoor hockey flooring and cricket nets, an indoor climbing wall, and a comprehensive fitness suite. Additionally, the 25-metre indoor heated swimming pool facilitates swimming and water polo programs. The school’s commitment to the arts is exemplified by the Gerald Moore Art Gallery, showcasing works by students and professional artists. These facilities, coupled with modern classrooms and a thriving sixth form centre in the Turberville building, provide students with an environment conducive to both academic achievement and personal development.
