The Medicine Personal Statement Portal
Oral health is a very important determinant of an individual’s physical, mental and social health. Having researched this noble profession and completed various invaluable work experience placements, I have made a firm decision to pursue a career in dentistry.
I have observed first hand how multifaceted dentistry is. While shadowing the dentist in the Smile Team, I observed root canals, denture fittings, tooth extractions as well as general check-ups. The challenge of diagnosis and the sheer practicality involved was extremely fascinating. I am interested in the technological advances in this field such as ‘regenerative dentistry’ and Professor Paul Sharp’s research into growing teeth from cells.

What further struck me was the importance of preventative dentistry and spreading awareness of good oral-hygiene in the community. In an internal symposium I delivered a talk, ‘The effect of Paan on oral health’. I enjoyed both researching and discovering the risks associated with this common asian habit. My placement in an orthodontist enabled me to learn how both biology and chemistry are integrated into different orthodontic treatments, thus combining my passion for both the sciences.
Â
I enjoyed reading ‘The Excruciating History of Dentistry’ by James Wynbrandt which dispelled the dental myths of the past. The history of dentistry is certainly colourful and at times excruciating. The prospect of making a trip to the dentist as pain free as possible and allaying patient worries is crucial to me. A recent article which I have read concerning the psychological impact dental problems can have on patients reinforced to me the importance of empathy.Â

The importance of establishing rapport with patients, especially appeals to me. During work experience I observed the manner in which dentists approached patients and I recognised the importance of clear communication. My own communicative abilities with different age groups have expanded through completing three months voluntary work at an Old People’s home and six months community service helping reception children. I realised how important it is to liaise with the different members of the Dental practice in order to ensure that the clinic runs efficiently, emphasising the importance of team work. My position as liaison between the maths and science societies has highlighted to me the necessity of dialogue.

My extra-curricular activities include water colour and henna painting. I find this immensely useful in improving my manual dexterity, essential for a dentist. My interest in Arabic Calligraphy has grown since I completed a 10 week summer Arabic course. I have since been teaching Arabic for beginners at my school and this has emphasised to me the benefit derived from peer teaching and the importance of patience. My participation in sports such as badminton and aerobics have been a wonderful addition to my other extra-curricular activities. I take a deep interest in Charity work and I have currently embarked upon a huge project which I initiated to raise GBP 26 000 to build an Orphan’s home in Pakistan. I hope this will improve my ability to organise fundraising activities, co-operate with others and delegate tasks. In addition, my cultural background has been enhanced through being Chair of Muslim Society.
I believe that Dentistry is the career path which will enable me to pursue my zeal for implementing my knowledge in a manner that will benefit society.
