Comenius Medical University is located in Bratislava, Slovakia. The main focus of the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University is to ‘educate future physicians who understand their profession as a mission’ – it seeks to produce physicians who are truly dedicated to their craft, not just teaching core medical knowledge and clinical ability, but also providing a moral and professional framework upon which they can draw in their future practice. Additionally, the Faculty of Medicine in Bratislava is well-known for its research, both in terms of that done by the faculty, and in terms of the ability for students to take on research themselves – in conjunction with the faculty or alone. There is a focus on curative-preventive Medicine that aligns well with the current worldwide trend towards preventive Medicine, and the school aims that its ‘application of theoretical and practical knowledge in everyday medical practice should significantly exceed the national, and in some areas also the European, average.’ This high goal is borne out by the school’s high level of competitiveness relative to many other EU medical schools.
Undergraduate study in General Medicine will furnish a student with a general natural science education, including the theoretical basics of anatomical structure of the human body, and its physiological functions. After this, students can then learn the basic principles of aetiology and pathogenesis, and thus begin to understand treatment modalities. Study is complete through then focusing on diagnostics, differential diagnostics, therapy and prevention of disease.
As an overview, First to Third-year will provide theoretical and pre-clinical lectures, labs and practical classes, while the Fourth to Sixth Years will then focus on hands-on experience – both at the bedside and in clinics.
Upon passing the state examination a graduate is given the degree of MUDr. – Medicinae universae doctor (Doctor of General Medicine), allowing them to then begin work as a physician. The credit system at Comenius Medical University is compatible with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
Tuition fees are 10,500 EUR per year.
Comenius Medical University does not interview, but it does conduct its own entrance examination. The faculty of Medicine offers all applicants materials for the Entrance Examination, covering Biology and Chemistry, although rather than learning the entire booklets offered by rote, targeted work with a tutor might be a more sensible approach. The entrance examination contains 100 questions from biology and 100 questions from chemistry, all of which are randomly selected from the provided booklets, and each offers four possible answers.
