City of London School for Girls 16+ Application Process & Interview Format

City of London School for Girls has a well-structured and rigorous application process for students seeking entry into the 16+ level. This process is designed to identify and admit students who are not only academically capable but also a good fit for the vibrant and intellectually stimulating environment of the school.

The application process typically begins in October. Candidates start with a multiple-choice test assessing critical thinking skills. This test aims to gauge how students respond to various stimuli and assesses their abilities in inference, deduction, and logical reasoning. Importantly, no specific preparation is required for this test, as it is designed to evaluate natural cognitive abilities.

Following the critical thinking skills test, candidates will sit up to four written papers, depending on their intended A Level choices. For subjects such as English, Classical Civilization, Classical Languages, Drama and Theatre Studies, Economics, Geography, History, Music, Politics, and Religious Philosophy and Ethics (RPE), candidates will write an essay from a choice of titles. The essay question will be argument-based, requiring candidates to examine the topic from multiple perspectives. While prior knowledge is not necessary, candidates may draw upon examples from their GCSE coursework as supporting evidence. Each essay paper is 45 minutes long and includes some planning time.

For candidates interested in mathematics, further mathematics, computer science, design and technology, or any of the sciences, a 45-minute mathematics paper is administered.

Modern language applicants will sit a 45-minute language paper.

After the written assessment, the school will invite selected candidates for interviews in November. These interviews serve as an opportunity for candidates to meet teaching staff in the subjects they intend to study at the A Level. The interviews are 10 minutes long and provide teachers with insights into candidates’ interest and aptitude in their chosen subjects.
