Cheltenham Ladies' College 16+ Application Process & Interview Format

The application process at Cheltenham Ladies’ College for 16+ entry is designed to holistically evaluate the potential of each candidate. The process begins with families exploring the school through a virtual tour and an in-person visit, offering insights into the college’s environment and ethos. Following this, the registration process requires the submission of a form to keep families informed about events and key deadlines.

One of the unique aspects of the application process is the submission of a handwritten essay by mid-July. This essay assesses the applicant’s ability to express thoughts coherently in writing, an essential skill regardless of subject choice. In some cases, this is followed by a virtual interview to discuss the essay, although not all candidates are required to interview at this stage.

Subsequently, applicants are asked to complete an entrance exam form where they indicate their subject preferences for A Level or IB courses. Entrance exams, typically held in early November, include written subject papers, an adaptive verbal reasoning test, and a choice between Maths/Science or Art/Humanities pathways. Additionally, applicants engage in a one-on-one interview and participate in a small group activity. Short-listed candidates for scholarships in academics, art, music, and sports undergo further assessments.

Offers are extended in early December of Year 11, based on a comprehensive review of each candidate’s performance across various assessments, including the entrance exams, interview, essay, and a reference from the current headteacher. Accepted applicants receive their house placements and joining information in the Summer Term of Year 11, culminating in an orientation program ahead of the new academic year.
