What is CASPer?

CASPer is a situational judgement test, run by a company called Altus Assessments. The company partnered with McMaster University, who were the first university to use the test, and responsible for creating it.

The CASPer was first developed as an online version of an MMI. The test therefore assesses ethics, empathy, team working ability, professionalism, ability to communicate with others, conflict resolution, problem solving, ability to judge a situation, and awareness of diversity and cultural issues.

When can I sit the CASPer? How much does it cost?

You can sit the CASPer throughout the year. There are around thirty chances to sit it per annum, with the majority being in the summer period. There are typically twenty sittings from May – September and up to ten from October through to April. You need not attend an assessment centre in order to take the CASPer, as it is an online examination. You can therefore sit it from your home, so long as you have a computer with a webcam and a fast internet connection. You should note that different colleges will have different ‘distribution deadlines’. This deadline constitutes the last time that the school can be added to your CASPer distribution list. Therefore, make sure that you are aware of the distribution deadline for each school that you apply to, and that you sit the CASPer well in advance of this.  The CASPer costs only 10 USD to sit, although you must pay an additional 10 USD to distribute your score to your chosen schools.

BlackStone provides an array of resources that will help you to succeed in the CASPer, through providing an overview of how to approach the test, tips to set yourself apart, and a huge array of questions and model answers, with more than 150 in the bank as it stands.

As a brief overview, you should give yourself 2 months to prepare for the test, and begin by researching the test, to ensure that you fully understand the exam and its aims. Then move onto practice questions, checking your answers throughout against model answers to ensure that you are progressing, and pinpoint any areas of weakness. Develop an approach to answering questions that works for you – our model approach is part of our resources, and serves as a great foundation to work from.

When you are sitting the exam, you should be hyper aware of time management. Ensure that you read all parts of a prompt, and answer the questions in such a way that you don’t get caught out by a particularly tricky question, and that you avoid repetition.
