Advice & Insight From Interview Specialists

Overview & Tuition Fees

Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University, or AFMKU, is located in Krakow, Poland – the country’s second largest city. It was established in 2000, and is now seen as one of the best institutions in Poland, with 7 faculties and more than 8,000 students.

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences has been included in the World Directory of Medical Schools, which is a list of verified medical schools – inclusion in this list signifies that the school has been approved by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. This approval was granted on Feb 5th, 2021, and it means that students can sit licensing exams across the world – notably including the United States Medical Licensing Examination, or USMLE (both steps 1 and 2). All foreign medical graduates wishing to practise in the US must take this exam.

The course is a forward-looking one, based on ‘modern trends in the field’ and the curriculum is integrated. That means different disciplines are combined in one, with body systems as a whole studied. For example, you might combine basic sciences on a given system with some clinical work – and you will focus on the muscular system, the circulatory and the respiratory system, the nervous system, the gastrointestinal system, the urinary and the reproductive system – and work across different medical and scientific disciplines within each (e.g. anatomy, physiology, pathology, etc). Clinical subjects are also integrated into modules, and will include topics from other medical fields – e.g. cardiology will contain work from radiology or paediatrics, etc. This is a modern approach to Medicine, seen in medical schools across the UK or US. It makes for a modern, holistic doctor.

Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University offers the medicine programme in English to its international students – and is proud to offer early patient contact, combined with a humanistic teaching approach. In the very first year, students will be exposed to patients in the module ‘first encounter with the sick person’ – and the biological and scientific elements of medical education are combined with humanities and more broad questions and seminars, covering concepts including ‘how to be a doctor’ or ‘death as seen from a social and cultural perspective.’

In total, you should expect more than 1200 hours of practical training, covering both bedside teaching and work in the lab.

You will be required to take a summer clerkship of four weeks. Year 6 is made up of 30 weeks of practical clinical rotations, across different healthcare centres, with a focus on the acquisition of, and assessment of, practical skill.

The city of Krakow itself dates back to the 600s AD, and is known as a major tourist destination, with an old town district, beautiful and varied architecture, and typical Polish cuisine.

The medical course here lasts six years, and tuition fees are € 15000 per year.
